Cubbies (DIY Cubbies) FAQs
1. Are the timbers used in the cubby houses and cubby
kits safe for use around children?
There has been a lot of discussion about CCA treated pine (Copper,
Chromium and arsenic)
We use:
- Untreated pine in the interior frame of the cubby, Western
Red Cedar cladding or ACQ treated pine cladding in the walls.
Both of these cladding products are considered by all the governing
government and industry regulatory bodies to be CHILD SAFE.
- ACQ or LOSP (Light organic solvent preservative) treated pine in the
handrails and decking, on all of our cubby range.
- Australian hardwood in the window and door frames as well as
on top of all of our handrails
- Compressed particleboard (yellow, Green or pink tongue) or L.O.S.P
Treated Plywood (light organic solvent preservative) in the flooring
and LOSP or ACQ treated timbers in the bearers and joist of the floor.
All these products are considered "CHILD SAFE"
2. Do I have to cut any timbers to size in the
DIY Cubby kit?
NO. All the work has been done for you. Every piece of timber has been
cut to size and each panel is packed and clearly labelled with the relevant
pieces in each pack.
The only exception to this rule is when you make custom changes to our
standard range of cubbies and there are some adjustments to be made to
handrails, legs and sandpits during the installation of the cubby
3. What are the most important parts to building
the cubby?
The most important things for you to do are:
- Read the instructions thoroughly, and be sure of the procedure before
you start and if you are not sure read them again throughout the construction
and installation.
- When you begin installing the cubby make sure the floor is level
and flat using a spirit level before you start to install the walls.
If you don't get this right you will have trouble with the installation
of the roof panels. Please read the instructions thoroughly
- You should paint or stain your cubby as soon as it has been finished
to seal the timbers and maintain its good looks.
- Treated pine cubby's will have some splitting of the cladding boards
as time goes on. This is a result of the timber drying out in the weather.
We do not warranty against splitting. The western red cedar cladding
is better quality cladding (that's why there is a big difference in
the pricing) so splitting will not be so prevalent.
4. How long will it take me to build my DIY
cubby?
We consider you have basic building knowledge and tools to do this job
or you would not have bought a DIY cubby.
There are two sections to the building of your DIY cubby. The assembly
of the walls floor and roofing panels and the installation of the cubby.
This assembly time for the panels will vary form one model to another
and depending on the ability of the people doing the work. The components
have been pre processed to save hours of work for you and we believe that
one or two handy people can complete the assemblies in two days. Reading
the instructions thoroughly is critical to helping with the assemblies.
The building of the cubby from the pre assembled panels should take no
longer than 2 hours for two people if you get the floor section levelled
with a spirit level. This is the most important factor in the successful
building of the cubby.
5. What tools will I need in your DIY cubby
kits?
- You will need a spirit level for levelling of the floor.
- A battery screwdriver/drill or electric screwdriver/drill.
- #2 Phillips head screwdriver bit for the drill/screwdriver.
- Square head screwdriver bit (supplied).
- 8 mm hexagonal "teck" driver bit.
- Hammer
- Ladder
- Tape measure
6. Do the cubbies come with windows?
YES, all of our cubbies come with sliding 3mm Perspex windows.
They are supplied with contact brown paper, clear or white plastic protection
to prevent scratching in transit. The paper contact is pealed off before
they are installed.
Aluminium windows are available to fit the openings where the perspex
windows are fitted if required. The aluminium windows have security catches
and can be latched closed for extra security.
7. What do the sizes of each cubby shown on
the web page mean?
The sizes shown on the web pages are the overall roof sizes. The sizes
include all parts of the cubby. That is the house, verandah, and all walls,
but do not include the extra sizes when a cubby is elevated. Not included
in the sizes shown are ladders, slides, scramble nets and any other attachments
that are used outside of the basic floor pattern. Please contact our office
if you wish to add any of the abovementioned accessories and you need
to know the final area required to install your selected cubby.
8. What is the size of the shipping package of your DIY cubby kits??
Because of our very large range, the shipping size depends on the model.
The size of the package and the weight is available if you contact our
office.
9. Does the freight price include home delivery?
Sydney Metropolitan Area
Yes if the cubby is delivered in the Sydney metropolitan area by our crane
truck. We deliver to a point able to be reached from 6 metres from the
middle of the truck. We do not take our truck onto your property unless
under your instructions and you accept full responsibility for any damage
that might be incurred.
Outside Sydney Area or Interstate
NO generally the delivery is to a freight terminal in your capital city.
We use TNT Road Freight because of their network Australia wide. They
have freight terminals and usually use contractors from the terminals
to your door. They charge extra for this service. You must be able to
unload the cubby at your home. The freight company will not supply labour
for unloading.
10. Are their any accessories supplied with
the cubby house?
Our cubbies are supplied with everything that is required to build the
on ground version of each style. Elevation kits, sand pits, slides and
other accessories are all additional to the base price. The prices of
the accessories are clearly shown under the options panel price list for
each model. A large range of accessories are available to be shipped with
your cubby. Please look at our options price list. We also have a large
range of children's swings and accessories which can be shipped with your
cubby house.
11. Can my cubby be dismantled if we sell our house and
want to take the cubby with us?
Yes. Your cubby has been installed from separate panels, usually seven
major pieces screwed together. Floor, 4 walls, 2 roof sections and a front
handrail section. Removing the two roof sections, unscrewing the 4 walls
where they are joined to each other in the corners and unscrewing the
walls from the floor will enable you to flat pack the cubby for easy transport.
The panels are then easily transported to the new location and then reassembled.
12. How long does it take to get a cubby made and delivered?
We usually supply within 2 working weeks except during the Christmas period
when we are very very busy and orders need to be in well in advance Usually
early November for Christmas. Please give us as much notice as possible
to meet your required delivery date.
